The 2023 Jeep Compass is a small crossover SUV positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee in Jeep's lineup. Last year, Jeep gave the Compass updated interior and exterior styling, more in-car tech and additional standard features. For 2023, Jeep is back at it again. This time, the Compass gains a new turbocharged engine that's more powerful and fuel-efficient than the one it replaces. Other enhancements include a new eight-speed automatic transmission, standard four-wheel-drive for all models, and the addition of a drowsy driver monitor and a rear seat reminder system. How does the Compass drive? The Jeep Compass' standard engine is a step up for the class. How's the interior? We like that the Compass is roomier than many smaller subcompact SUVs. Front passengers get generous headroom and legroom. There's also lots of rear legroom. How's the tech? Our test vehicle's 10.1-inch touchscreen was impressively large and sharp. The configurable home screen is particularly useful in this car, to save you digging through menus for your commonly used commands. The wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration works smoothly too. How's the storage? Compare the Compass to subcompacts and you'll be pleased: It's got one of the biggest cargo areas 27.2 cubic feet behind the second row. After its redesign last year ushered in some much-needed quality-of-life updates inside and out, the Jeep Compass is back at it for 2023 with a new powertrain and standard all-wheel drive. Jeep puts a 200-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with an eight-speed automatic in every Compass. A trip to our test track proved that the turbo four offers the right amount of power for the Compass's compact frame, hustling the SUV to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. The Compass feels more agile than its tall, boxy profile would suggest, responding ably to inputs, and the steering is nicely weighted but lacks road feel. Overall, the Compass feels well-controlled, solidly planted, and capable on the road. An off-road course we braved when we first drove the Compass revealed that it can hold its own at least over moderate obstacles, and we noticed nary a stumble from the all-wheel-drive system.
