This modern Beetle, however, has a peppy-yet-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. It also has more space than most of its compact convertible rivals. Acceleration should be strong whether you're pulling away from a stoplight or overtaking on the freeway. Steering is responsive and quick on the highway, and it's light when maneuvering at slow speeds. Though Volkswagen plays off the 2019 Beetle's style, this is one of the more comfortable and refined small convertibles. The seats hug you without being oppressive, and the suspension dispatches road imperfections without transmitting any harshness to the driver. The Beetle is bigger and generally easier to use than its few competitors. It has logically placed controls and it's easy to enter and exit. Its roof is also high enough for a pair of tall adults in the front. Its shape is among the most distinctive on the road; happily, the Beetle, offered as a coupe or a convertible, is as fun to drive as it looks. The 2019 VW Beetles iconic shape is endearing. If you don't find the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle still a little bit fun, you might want to loosen up. Thanks to its iconic shape, it is an instantly recognizable little runabout, and one that's got a heaping of character, which is why we've awarded 8 out of 10 points. The 6-speed automatic delivers smooth shifts and features a manual mode for descending hills and having a little fun. Coupled with a relatively soft suspension setup, the Beetle is geared for comfort rather than driving fun, however. Its chassis is balanced and its steering is direct enough that drivers have a good time on a twisty back road.
