A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. Acceleration is significantly improved compared with the standard Jetta's 147-hp engine. With the seven-speed automatic, the GLI went from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds in our testing, which is 2.1 seconds than the regular Jetta with the eight-speed automatic. The GLI's responses are sharper, too, thanks to a lowered suspension and upgraded brakes. While the GLI has the same basic roomy cabin as the standard Jetta, a few bits of red trim spice things up somewhat. Even the base model has features such as blind-spot monitoring, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start. When the original Jetta GLI debuted way back in 1984, it quickly became a favorite with driving enthusiasts. It offered the practicality of a sedan but the fun of a sporty hatchback. This Jetta is about as close to a GTI as you can get without actually buying one. The engine has a satisfying amount of power at almost any rpm, and either transmission makes easy work of city traffic or a great back road. The brakes and suspension can keep up as well, making the GLI quite the well-rounded sedan. VW has struck a very good balance with the GLI's ride quality. Both gearboxes are as excellent here as they are in the GTI. Like the interior, the 14-cubic-foot trunk appears far larger than the spec sheet indicates. There's more car to love here than in the GTI, and for those who buy by the inch, the Jetta GLI will be an easy choice. Put up against its only sedan competition, the Honda Civic Si and the Subaru WRX, the Jetta GLI makes an even more compelling case.
